DAY 011: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

In our continuing journey through the book of Psalms, today we look at three psalms written by King David, who was lamenting dealing with his foes. The Book of Psalms is a collection of prayers, praise, worship, and song to the Lord God Jehovah.

Take a moment and pray, seeking understanding for today’s reading. Read Psalms 3-5. Let’s journey!

In this, the first book of Psalms, the majority of the psalms are written by King David. Throughout the book of Psalms, nearly every psalm can be classified as a psalm of Lament or a psalm of praise. A lament is a cry to the Lord, asking Him to do something, most often when we are in pain, confused, or angry. A psalm of praise is a prayer of joy and celebration, thanking the Lord for His work.

Psalms 3-5: David asks the Lord for deliverance from his foes. He pleads for an answer to his prayers as the pressure of circumstances around Him builds to a point that seems unbearable. In Chapter 5 David reminds the Lord of his continuous pleas, his relentless call upon the name of the Lord, to deliver him and his people from their current situation calling upon the Lord to deal with his tormentors. David not only seeks relief from his tormentors he also asks the Lord to lead him in righteousness. (Psalms 3:1-5:12)

Read chapters 3-5 and ask yourself these questions: Are these psalms of lament or praise? How do you know? What deeper understanding of David is provided through these psalms? Take a moment and offer at least one praise and one lament from your own life.
