DAY 352: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR
Continuing our journey through the final book of law, Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the Israelites of God’s promises and what was to come.
Before reading Deuteronomy 29-31, pray for understanding of today’s reading. Read Deuteronomy 29-31. Let’s journey!
Deuteronomy is the fifth and final book of the Jewish Torah. It concludes the Books of Moses in the Christian Old Testament. As with the previous four, Moses wrote this book, which retells many of the events recorded in the previous books. Its purpose was to help guide the new generation that was preparing to enter the Promised Land. It is a reminder to the new generation to remain faithful to the covenant made between the Israelites and God.
Deuteronomy 29-31: Moses leads the Israelites through a formal recommitment to the covenant between the Israelites and the Lord. God, knowing the weaknesses of His chosen people, has ensured a process for returning to Him and seeking forgiveness. Again, Moses reminds the Israelites to stay focused on the Lord and not turn to other gods. In front of all of Israel, Joshua is appointed as Moses’ successor – Joshua will lead the people into the Promised Land, but they must not forget or abandon the Law of Moses. Before Moses’ death, the Lord instructed Moses to help prepare the Israelites for their future – where they abandoned the Lord and their promises. (Deuteronomy 29:1-31:30)
After you finish today’s reading, take some time and consider the following: Why would Moses recount this part of the Israelite’s journey? What can be learned from it? Stop and reflect upon your personal journey. What lessons have you learned? What lessons do you need to remember?
