DAY 342: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Today, we begin our journey through the Book of Revelation. Revelation is the only book of prophecy in the New Testament. It is the last book of the Bible and foretells events that will occur before, during, and after Jesus Christ’s return.

Ask the Lord for His understanding of Revelation 1-6. Read Revelation 1-6. Let’s journey!

RevelationThis last book of prophecy was written by the Apostle John, while he was in exile on the island of Patmos, during the later part of his life.  The book contains a prophetic revelation of what was to come, like some of the books of prophecy in the Old Testament.  This prophetic revelation was sent as a letter to seven churches in Asia Minor, to address several issues.  To understand this book, we need to remember whom John is addressing and what meaning it holds for them.  Throughout the book, there is an underlying warning that history repeats itself and all kingdoms come to reject the Lord.  Only through Jesus can evil be removed from the world.

Revelation 1-6:  John receives a vision from Jesus Christ.  John was given seven messages to send to seven churches, one in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.  Each letter contained a warning and encouragement.  John receives a vision of the throne room of Heaven.  Only the Lamb who was slain is worthy to open the scroll, resulting in a joyous celebration.  Six of the seven seals are opened.  (Revelation 1:1-6:17)

After concluding today’s reading, consider the following: Revelation is a very difficult book to read and understand.  There are multiple interpretations of the imagery and symbols used throughout the book.  Consider what John sees and hears in his vision.  What is it?  What can be learned from today’s reading?  How could this book have provided hope to the churches who received it?  How can it provide hope to you?
