Vaughn Ross was executed by the state of Texas on July 18, 2013. He was pronounced dead at 6:38 pm CDT, inside the Walls Unit execution chamber at the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. Vaughn was 41 years of age. He was executed for the murder of 18-year-old Viola Leanna Ross McVade (no relation) and 53-year-old Douglas Birdsall on January 31, 2001, in Lubbock, Texas. Vaughn had been dating Viola’s sister and became upset when he was unable to reach her that night.
Vaughn had graduated high school and went on to Texas Tech University, where he was studying for a doctor’s degree in architecture. He was part of a fraternity at college and was considered a good guy by those who knew him. He had worked with several architectural firms. Vaughn had previously been convicted of stabbing his girlfriend 15 times and stealing her car.
