Focus Verses For Today: Job 34:22-24

Today, we continue our journey through the book of Job, a man searching for the answer to a question many of us have asked: why is this happening to me?

Take some time to pray for God’s understanding and guidance for our journey through Job 23-24. After you have finished praying read Job 23-24. Let the journey begin!

JobJob 23-24: Job expresses his frustration with his friend Bildad. Job knows that the suffering he is experiencing can only be corrected by God. Job believes he needs to confront God about his suffering, face to face, but Job does not know where God is. Job believes he is a righteous man. Job wonders why God allows the unrighteous to pray on the poor, the weak, and the widows, delaying His (God’s) judgment on them. Job knows that although God’s judgment of the unrighteous may be slow, by Job’s understanding, it shall come. Job also knows that the Lord will deliver him. Something Job’s three friends cannot comprehend. (Job 23:1-24:25)

Our focus verses for today:

22But God drags away the mighty by his power;
    though they become established, they have no assurance of life.
23He may let them rest in a feeling of security,
    but his eyes are on their ways.
24For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;
    they are brought low and gathered up like all others;
    they are cut off like heads of grain.
(Job 24:22-24, NIV)

Job found himself in a place where he believed God was no longer hearing his plea for deliverance. Job knew that he lived his life for God. Job also knew that he did not understand the ways of God. Job had tough questions for God, but he never allowed those questions to challenge God’s authority over his life. Job understood that he didn’t understand. Job also knew his role in his relationship with God: Job was to be obedient to God, no matter what. Job’s questions are not about his relationship with God, so much, as to why Job was tormented with suffering he could not understand. Take another look at our focus verse for today. Job understood that wealth and status were fleeting. Job understood that the wealth and status of this world are nothing when we are called to the grave. Job understood that all that matters in this life is the relationship we establish with the Lord. Job understood that he didn’t understand the ways of the Lord. But Job understood! Do you?
