Darryl Barwick

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, Florida carried out the execution of Darryl Barwick.  He was 56 years of age.  Darryl was pronounced dead at 6:14 pm local time inside the execution chamber at the Florida State Penitentiary in Raiford, Florida.  He was executed for murdering 24-year-old Rebecca Wendt on March 31, 1986, in Panama City, Florida.  Darryl spent the last 36 years of his life on death row in Florida.

Darryl grew up in a dysfunctional family. He was abused as a child, as were his siblings.

On the morning of March 31, 1986, Rebecca Wendt was outside her apartment building sunbathing.  She returned inside around 11:45 am.  As police later determined, Darryl Barwick followed Rebecca inside intending to rob her.  When Rebecca attempted to stop Barwick, he stabbed her over 37 times.  It was also determined that someone had unsuccessfully attempted to remove her bathing suit.

Rebecca’s body was discovered that evening when her sister and roommate returned to the apartment. Rebecca’s body was wrapped in a comforter and left in the bathroom. Bloody footprints and fingerprints were also at the scene.

Another resident who was also outside sunbathing that morning reported seeing a man lurking around. Eventually, the man was observed heading toward Rebecca’s apartment. Later the man was seen walking from Rebecca’s apartment toward the woods. The witness later identified the man as Barwick.

Barwick initially denied being involved in the crime, however, he was arrested on April 15, 1986. He then confessed to the crime, claiming he never meant to hurt Rebecca and only did so after she resisted. Barwick was convicted and sentenced to death.

Barwick was granted a new trial in 1989. In 1992, he was retired and resentenced to death.

Please pray for peace for the family of Rebecca Wendt.  Pray for strength for the family of Darryl Barwick.
