Focus Verses For Today: Luke 4:23-27
Today we return to the only Gentile writer of the Bible: Dr. Luke. Luke looks at the ministry of John the Baptist, leading to the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.
Take some time with the Lord asking Him for His true meaning of today’s journey through Luke 3-4. Read Luke 3-4. Let’s journey!
Luke 3-4: Our journey today begins with John the Baptist’s message of repentance. John’s message was so strong that people from all walks of life came to John for direction and baptism. Before moving on to the ministry of Jesus, Luke traces the genealogy of Christ back to Adam to show that Jesus is the Savior of all; not just the Jew. John the Baptist baptizes Jesus, who begins His ministry. Jesus fasts in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights, after which He tempted by Satan. He did not succumb to temptation. Jesus begins His ministry throughout Judea and is rejected at Nazareth. He drives out an impure spirit, heals many, and tells the people that His purpose in coming was to proclaim the good news. (Luke 3:1-4:44)
Our focus verses for the day:
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”

Human nature is hard to harness and control. The people of Nazareth recognized Jesus as the son of Joesph and not the son of God. He grew up with some of them. Now, here in the Synagogue, Jesus the son of Joseph is claiming to be the Messiah, the Son of God. Reason often collides with faith, a lesson the people of Nazareth were about to learn.
