DAY 129: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

As we continue our journey through the kings of Israel, we continue looking at King David. King David had it all when having it all wasn’t enough.

Ask the Lord for His meaning of 2 Samuel 10-14. Read 2 Samuel 10-14. Let’s journey!

The books of First and Second Samuel were originally one book, that was later split in two due to its length. Before the start of this book, Israel had resided in the Promised Land for some time, and we saw their continued moral decline under the rule of judges. The books of Samuel are books of transition. In these books, the 12 Tribes of Israel are united into one nation under one king. First and Second Samuel are a character-driven story, with the three main characters of Samuel, Saul, and David. These men, especially Saul and David, have their own character strengths and weaknesses. We are going to study these as we journey through their lives.

2 Samuel 10-14: Israel’s military power was great and strong. David did not always go with his military, allowing him to succumb to temptation. King David committed adultery, which ultimately led to the murder of a loyal and trusted soldier. The Lord’s punishment for this sin was the loss of an illegitimate child, a nation constantly at war, and a dysfunctional family. It also shows the Lord’s forgiveness. The first dysfunction of the curse appears when Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar, the sister of Absalom, who then kills Amnon to avenge the rape of his sister before going into exile for 3 years. With the help of Joab, King David allows Absalom to come home. (2 Samuel 10:1-14:33)

After reading chapters 10 through 14, consider the following: What strengths and weaknesses did you observe in the people in today’s reading? Did you see yourself in any of the characters you read about today? How so? What can you learn about your character from today’s reading? Reflect on your own character, is it all pleasing to the Lord?
