DAY 172: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Our journey through the Bible today takes us through Psalms 72-74, where we encounter absolute joy in God, despair, and lamentation.

As we conclude our journey through the second book of Psalms (Psalms 72) and begin our journey into the third book of Psalms (Psalms 73), remember that nearly every psalm can be classified as a psalm of Lament or a psalm of praise. A lament is a cry to the Lord, asking Him to do something, most often when we are in pain, confused, or angry. A psalm of praise is a prayer of joy and celebration, thanking the Lord for His work.

Psalm 72-74: Psalm 72 is the final Psalm written by King David. It is a Psalm that says God is King forever, protect your people and your creation from the unjust. Our final two psalms are written by Asaph. In Psalm 73, Asaph questions why he should heed the Lord’s instruction when those who scorn and defy the Lord live blessed lives. Asaph answers that question in our focus verses for the day. In Psalm 74, is Asaph lamenting God’s rejection of His chosen people. Asaph cries out to God seeking redemption and forgiveness for God’s chosen people. (Psalms 72:1-74:23)

Read chapters 72-74, and ask yourself these questions: Are these psalms of lament or praise? How do you know? What does this psalm teach you about the Lord? Take a moment and offer at least one praise and one lament from your own life.
