DAY 300: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Today, we both begin and conclude our journey through the book of Habakkuk.  The book of Habakkuk is a conversation between Habakkuk and the Lord.

Ask the Lord for His understanding of Habakkuk 1-3. Read Habakkuk 1-3. Let’s journey!

Habakkuk lived during the final days of the Southern Kingdom, when the people no longer worshiped the Lord, instead worshipping idols, and injustice was tolerated and celebrated.  The nation had turned their backs on the Lord.  Habakkuk asks many questions of God, that we still have today!

HabakkukHabakkuk 1-3: Habakkuk lived in Judah and had seen its downward spiral away from the Lord.  During his life, Habakkuk also witnessed King Josiah attempt to lead the nation back to the Lord, only for his son, upon Josiah’s death, to lead Judah back into moral decay.  Habakkuk first questions how the Lord could allow Judah to fall so far.  When the Lord answers that punishment will come from Babylon, Habakkuk questions how such an unrighteous nation can be used to punish a nation that is more righteous than Babylon.  The Lord assures Habakkuk that Babylon will also be punished for their unrighteousness, in the Lord’s timing.  (Habakkuk 1:1-3:19)

As you study today’s reading, consider: What is Habakkuk asking?  What is God’s response?  Are Babylon’s behaviors limited to Babylon?  Will God continue his judgment on nations who have followed in Babylon’s example?
