Ohio Execution of Quisi Bryan Rescheduled from October 26, 2022, to January 7, 2026

Quisi Bryan was scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Mansfield, Ohio. His execution has been rescheduled to January 7, 2026. Fifty-two-year-old Quisi is convicted of murdering 32-year-old police officer Wayne Leon on June 25, 2000, in Cleveland, Ohio. Quisi has spent the last 21 years on death row in Ohio.
Quisi had a history of selling drugs and robbing other drug dealers. In 1995, he was arrested and convicted of attempted robbery. He was paroled in 1998. Quisi violated his parole and an arrest warrant was issued. He was indicted for theft and receiving stolen property.
On June 25, 2000, police officer Wayne Leon pulled in behind Quisi Bryan at a gas station in Cleveland, Ohio. Officer Leon noticed that the temporary tag on Bryan’s vehicle had been altered. He asked for Bryan’s driver’s license and returned to his vehicle to run a check on the vehicle and the license. Officer Leon radioed the station while Bryan pulled a handgun from his coat. Bryan shot Officer Leon in the face, killing him instantly. After retrieving his license, Bryan fled the scene.
Kenneth Niedhammer, a private security agent, heard the shooting and then saw the officer lying in a pool of blood. He also observed, immediately after the shooting, a vehicle leaving the gas station and driving erratically. Kenneth activated his siren and lights and gave chase. Bryan stopped his car twice to get out and shoot at Kenneth. Eventually, Bryan crashed his vehicle and fled on foot. He was arrested later that day in Columbus, Ohio.
Bryan was charged with the murder of Officer Wayne Leon and the attempted murder of Kenneth Niedhammer. He was convicted and sentenced to death.
While in prison, Bryan pled guilty in four sexual assault cases resulting in a 48-year sentence. He was convicted in a fifth sexual assault case to which he pled not guilty, resulting in a 20-50 years prison sentence.
The Ohio Supreme Court schedules execution dates years in advance. Due to ongoing problems establishing an execution protocol and obtaining drugs for use in executions, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issues reprieves for each inmate, rescheduling their executions for a later date.
