39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in [Jesus] because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (John 4:39-42, NIV)

When life gets hard, we all want someone to rescue us. The idea of having someone save us from the hardships of life is an attractive one. However, too often people expect others to help them, without ever having to reciprocate. A savior is something everyone wants. A savior is something everyone needs.

Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. He is the Savior of every man, woman, and child. He is the Savior of every single person – past, present, and future – on this earth. Savior is the final name of Jesus that we will study this year. It is, perhaps, the most obvious of His many names and titles. In many of our previous studies, we have mentioned Jesus as the Savior. But what exactly does it mean that Jesus is our Savior?

All humans need a savior. We are all guilty of sin. God, who is completely holy, is unable to be in the presence of sin, which leads to death. But He wants a relationship with each and every one of us! He wants us to spend eternity with Him! But we cannot do so when we are polluted by sin. To cleanse us of our sins, a sacrifice is required.

For generations, animal sacrifice was required. The animal had to be without the blemish – the best of the flock. Their innocent blood would cover a person’s sin, allowing them to come before the Lord. But animal sacrifices had to be repeated, as they were of this sinful world and could not provide everlasting forgiveness for sin.

Enter Jesus. As we have learned this past year, Jesus is both fully human and fully divine. He lived a perfect, blameless, sin-free life. He did not deserve to die. Jesus died anyway. He willingly went to His horrific death, shedding His perfect blood, to cover the sins of all mankind – past, present, and future. His blood and death covered our sins. And three days after His death, He arose from the grave. He defeated death and lived again. Because of His bloody sacrifice, we are able to approach God. Because He defeated death, we are able to live eternally with God in Heaven.

So what does this mean for us? Jesus saved us from our sins. Jesus saved us from eternal death. The sacrifice has already been made. Now it is up to us to accept it. This Christmas, the greatest gift will not be under your tree. The greatest gift is standing at the door of your heart, knocking. Will you let Him in? Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? Consider all the implications of Jesus as your Savior!
