Elmer Leon Caroll was executed by the state of Florida on May 29, 2013. He was pronounced dead at 6:12 pm EDT, inside the execution chamber at the Florida State Penitentiary in Raiford, Florida. Elmer was 56 years of age. He was executed for the rape and murder of 10-year-old Christine McGowan on October 28, 1990, in her Apopka, Florida home. Elmer also stole Christine’s father’s construction truck.

A mental health expert testified that Elmer was an alcoholic and abused multiple drugs. Elmer reportedly had a low level of education. Elmer had previously been convicted, twice, for molesting children. At the time of the murder, he was living in a halfway house. While in prison, Elmer was written up at least 20 times for various offenses.
