Elroy Chester was executed by the state of Texas on June 12, 2013. He was pronounced dead at 7:04 pm CDT, inside the Wall Unit execution chamber at the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. Elroy was 43 years of age. He was executed for the murder of 38-year-old firefighter Willie Ryman III, on February 6, 1998, during a robbery of Willie’s sister’s home in Port Arthur, Texas. During the robbery, Elroy also raped Willie’s two nieces. After his arrest, he confessed to the crime, along with two other murders and three attempts to commit murder. During his trial, Elroy bragged about the robbery and expressed his wish to kill more people. He also threatened to kill police officers and prison guards if he was sent to jail.
Elroy graduated from high school, although he was in special education classes, which were taught at a third-grade level. He had never lived independently and could not read or write well enough to fill out a job application. Elroy only ever had menial labor jobs. He had previously been involved in two other burglaries and served time for them. He also served time for violating his parole.
Please pray for peace and healing for the family of Willie Ryman. Please pray for the family of Elroy. Elroy said that he had turned his life over to Christ.
