The Names of Jesus

What Is In A Name – Bright Morning Star

Bright Morning Star

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” (Revelation 22:16, NIV)

Bright StarVenus is the brightest light to appear in the night sky, other than the sun and the moon. It is the light most easily visible to the human eye, and, when viewed alongside other stars in the night sky, Venus is easily the brightest, shining steadily. Depending upon the time of year, Venus either appears shortly before sunrise or as the sun sets. Venus is closer to the sun than Earth, allowing light to easily reflect off her, making her easy to see. Throughout historical literature, the term morning star nearly always refers to Venus.

During the time of Jesus, it was much easier to see the night sky than it is today. Artificial lights block out much of the night sky. If you have ever been in the middle of nowhere, far from city lights, and viewed the night sky, the difference is amazing! During the time of Jesus, there was very little artificial light to block out the night sky. Stars (lights in the night sky) were used to aid those traveling during the night. Watching the progress of the stars through the night sky could help those working at night keep track of time as it passed, just as how the sun is used during the day.

Jesus is the bright Morning Star. Seeing Venus in the morning meant the sun was coming. Jesus, as the bright Morning Star, is announcing that the ultimate light, the Lord God, is coming. His coming announces the coming of something even more amazing! The morning star announces the coming of a new day. When Jesus returns as the Morning Star, He will be announcing the coming of a new age. The final prophecies will be fulfilled and His mission to earth will be complete as the new kingdom of the Lord will be established.

So what does this mean for us? The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is an event that cannot be missed! Jesus will bring His light into a dark world. Until then, we are to reflect the light of Jesus in our lives. We should strive to shine as bright as Morning Star. How can you shine the light of Jesus in your life?
