Brett HartmanThe state of Ohio executed Brett Xavier Hartman on November 13, 2012. Brett was pronounced dead at 10:34 am local time inside the execution chamber at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Mansfield, Ohio. Brett was 38 years of age. He was convicted and executed for the murder of his girlfriend, 46-year-old Winda Snipes on September 9, 1997, in her Akron, Ohio apartment. Winda was stabbed over 100 times. Brett spent the last 14 years of his life on death row in Ohio.

Brett did not have an easy childhood. He moved frequently and was, for a time, left by his mother on an isolated Indian reservation with his aunt. Brett was known to have behavioral problems and was often sent away by whomever he was living with when he began acting out. His parents were divorced. As a youth, Brett began stealing cars and abusing alcohol. His alcohol abuse led to an overdose at the age of 12. Prior to his arrest, Brett worked as a chef.
