Derrick Mason Executed in Alabama

The state of Alabama executed Derrick O’Neal Mason on September 22, 2011. Derrick was pronounced dead at 6:40 pm local time, inside the execution chamber at the Holeman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. Derrick was 37 years of age. He was convicted of murdering 25-year-old Angela Michele Cagle, a convenience store clerk in Huntsville, Alabama on March 24, 1994. Derrick spent the last 16 years of his life on Alabama’s death row.

Derrick alleged that he was coerced into confessing to the crime. He also alleged that on the night of the murder, he had smoked marijuana laced with psychoactive substances. Derrick did not have any prior significant criminal history.
