Focus Verses for Today: Joel 2:12-14
Today, our journey takes us through the prophetic book of Joel. Joel reflects upon what has happened in Israel and calls for all of Israel to repent of their sins, before reflecting upon what is to come.
Pray and seek God’s understanding of Joel 1-3. Read Joel 1-3. Let’s journey!
Joel 1-3: When the book of Joel begins, a swarm of locusts has just destroyed the crops planted by the Israelites. Joel calls for repentance, as one day the judgment of the Lord will come as fast and as unexpected as the swarm of locusts, with just as devastating results. After God’s judgment, peace will reign, and Israel’s land will be restored. (Joel 1:1-3:21)
Our focus verses for today:
“Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart
and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave behind a blessing—
grain offerings and drink offerings
for the Lord your God.
(Joel 2:12-14, NIV)
The Israelites had strayed far, far from the Lord. After all that He had done for them, they rejected Him. Yet God had not forgotten, nor forsaken them. God asked them still to return Him. It is the same He asks of us today. Return to Him! We can never stray too far from God that He will not be willing to forgive us. Repent; wholeheartedly! And return to Him!
