Focus Verses For Today: Psalm 138:1-3

Today’s journey continues our study in the book of Psalms. We reflect on the past and praise the Lord.

Take a moment and pray, seeking understanding for today’s reading. Read Psalms 137-139. Let’s journey!

PsalmsPsalms 137-139: The first psalm in our journey today, whose author is unknown, reflects upon a time when Israel was in captivity and the people felt despair. The author of the psalm is unknown. The final two psalms were written by David. Both are psalms of praise. (Psalms 137:1-139:24)

Our focus verses for today:

1I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
    before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
2I will bow down toward your holy temple
    and will praise your name
    for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
    that it surpasses your fame.
3When I called, you answered me;
    you greatly emboldened me.
(Psalm 138:1-3, NIV)

Although written by David, this psalm brings the prophet Daniel to mind. Daniel, in the face of death, continued to turn towards Jerusalem and publicly offer worship for the Lord. God may not always answer our prayers in the manner we would like – I’m sure Daniel would have preferred NOT to be thrown to the lions! – but He gives us the power and strength to withstand our adversity. Is your praise never-ceasing? No matter what?
