Focus Verses For Today: Deuteronomy 23:21-23

Continuing our journey through the final book of law, Deuteronomy, Moses continues to remind the Israelites of how they are to behave in the Promised Land.

Before reading Deuteronomy 23-25, pray for understanding of today’s reading. Read Deuteronomy 23-25. Let’s journey!

DeuteronomyDeuteronomy 23-25: Moses gives instructions on how outsiders were to be included and why soldiers were to remain clean. In the remainder of today’s reading, Moses addresses several miscellaneous laws that had been given to the Israelites. (Deuteronomy 23:1-25:19)

Our focus verses for today:

21 If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23 Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.
(Deuteronomy 23:21-23, NIV)

Promises to the Lord are not to be made lightly. Promises to the Lord are binding. There is wisdom in refraining from making a promise that you cannot keep. When was the last time you made a promise – to the Lord and/or to another person? Did you keep your word? Did you need reminding and prompting? Is there a promise you need to keep now?
