DAY 019: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Our journey for today continues through the book of Job. The Lord has withdrawn his protection from Job, allowing Satan to torment Job. Job is visited by his friends, including Eliphaz, who challenges the perceived sins of Job. Keep in mind that Eliphaz is not a bad guy or an unworthy friend. Eliphaz has a limited understanding of how God’s world works. Eliphaz, like many people today, fails to understand that Satan is searching the earth for people to prey upon. Eliphaz appears to be prideful; maybe not! Like Eliphaz’s assessment of Job’s predicament, our view of Eliphaz, with our limited understanding of his view of how God works, makes him appear to be prideful of his relationship with God.

Ask the Lord for His understanding of Job 5-6. Read Job 5-6. Let’s journey!

JobJob and his friends have each made assumptions about God, about how God rules, and about how justice in the world works. These assumptions are revealed throughout this book. Many of these assumptions continue to be held today!

Job 5-6: Our reading today starts with Eliphaz, Job’s friend, challenging Job to confess to God the sin that brought this calamity upon Job. Once again, it appears, that Jewish people of that time, at least the ones who are shared in God’s word, looked upon material blessings as rewards from God for living a righteous life. From Eliphaz’s perspective, the calamity that Job was experiencing was punishment from God. Eliphaz’s circular thinking could not allow him to see it any other way. Job refutes Eliphaz, attempting to explain that things are not as they appear to Eliphaz. Job continues describing his condition. (Job 5:1-6:30)

Read chapters 5 and 6 and ask yourself these questions: What assumptions about God and the way He rules are being made by Job? What assumptions about God and the way He rules are being made by Eliphaz? What assumptions have you made about God and the way He rules in your life?
