DAY 267: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Today, we begin our journey through the book of Hebrews by reading chapters 1-4.

Before reading Hebrews 1-4, pray for understanding of today’s reading. Read Hebrews 1-4.  Let’s journey!

HebrewsThe author of the book of Hebrews is unknown, however, the author had spent time around the disciples who were with Jesus during His earthly ministry.  It is also unclear to exactly whom the book was written, although it is evident that the recipients of the letter had a thorough knowledge of the Torah.  The recipients were also going through a time of persecution and hardship due to their faith.

Hebrews 1-4:  The book of Hebrews was likely written to a group of Jewish Christians, likely in Rome, facing persecution and trials and in danger of giving up and returning to the known and comforting worship of Jewish tradition.  The author begins his letter by reaffirming the divinity of Jesus Christ, as well as His humanity, a requirement for salvation to be delivered.  The readers are encouraged to hold strong to their faith, not to go the way of the faithless Israelites of old.  Hold strong that we may, one day, enter eternal rest with the Lord.  (Hebrews 1:1-4:16)

After concluding today’s reading, consider the following: The author of the book of Hebrews is offering encouragement to a group that needs it.  How is he offering encouragement?  What message is in today’s reading?  How can you apply that message to your life?
