DAY 281: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR
Today, we continue our journey through the book of Hebrews. Jesus fulfilled the old covenant, giving way to the new covenant.
Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide an understanding of Hebrews 8-10. Read Hebrews 8-10. Let’s journey!
The author of the book of Hebrews is unknown, however, the author had spent time around the disciples who were with Jesus during His earthly ministry. It is also unclear to exactly whom the book was written, although it is evident that the recipients of the letter had a thorough knowledge of the Torah. The recipients were also going through a time of persecution and hardship due to their faith.
Hebrews 8-10: Jesus Christ is the ultimate high priest. Through Him a new covenant was established, eliminating the old. Jesus’ sacrifice is the reason animal sacrifices are no longer required. Jesus’ sacrifice is the reason we can directly confess our sins to the Lord, without going to a high priest. Jesus’ sacrifice is why we are able to be eternally saved. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, the perfect sacrifice. Jesus’ sacrifice created a new covenant; we, and those who received this letter, were no longer bound by the covenant made in the Old Testament. It was an encouragement to those new in the faith to not abandon their beliefs but to hold fast to each other and remain strong in their faith. (Hebrews 8:1-10:39)
After concluding today’s reading, consider the following: The author of the book of Hebrews is offering encouragement to a group that needs it. How is he offering encouragement? What message is in today’s reading? How can you apply that message to your life?
