DAY 323: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR
Today, our journey takes us through the entirety of 2 Peter. In this letter, we can see how Peter has grown from the disciple who would speak and act before thinking, from the disciple who denied Christ as He was on trial, and into a leader of the church, secure in his faith, even when facing his death at the hands of those wish to see him suffer.
This second letter by Peter, a disciple called by Jesus Christ who became a powerful leader in the early church, is sent out to the same network of churches in Asia Minor as Peter’s first letter. This letter from Peter is thought to be his last. It was likely written while he was in prison in Rome, where he would eventually be killed. Throughout the letter, Peter gives strong warnings against corrupt leaders and teachers, who go against the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide an understanding of 2 Peter 1-3. Read 2 Peter 1-3. Let’s journey!
2 Peter 1-3: Peter begins his letter by establishing his credentials and calling upon the readers to maintain their faith through their actions. Peter reminds them of how scripture has been fulfilled and will continue to be fulfilled. Peters moves on to the heart of his message: false teachers. He does not try to dispute each individual false claim but highlights some of their false teachings. Peter compares the punishment for false teachers, to that of the angels who rebelled and were cast out of heaven. The day of the Lord is not far, but the Lord allows time for all to repent. We must be ready! (2 Peter 1:1-3:18)
After concluding today’s reading, consider the following: What is Peter’s message(s) in today’s passage? How can what you learned today be applied to your life?
