DAY 344: JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR
Today, our journey takes us through the entirety of 2 John. This letter is believed to be written by the Apostle John. This letter was likely written near the end of John’s life. John maintained his zeal for Christ throughout his life and is believed to be the longest-living eyewitness to Jesus Christ.
Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide an understanding of 2 John. Read 2 John. Let’s journey!
The Letters of John, the Books of 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John, are believed to have been written by the Apostle John, a disciple of Jesus Christ. The letters were written near the end of John’s life, where he was overseeing a network of churches that met within people’s homes. This church community had recently experienced a crisis, which prompted the writing of these letters. Some people who had recently left the community were now denying Jesus as the Messiah, and ridiculing those who stayed and remained faithful. This letter offers a special warning against false teachers and a warning against supporting them.
2 John: John continues with his theme of love in this letter. This letter is addressed to a woman known for her hospitality. John commends her for her actions (and the raising of her children) but also issues a warning of allowing her gift to lead her, and others, astray. Love must be shown to all, but there must also be discretion. John warned the woman against hosting false teachers. She was not to be mean or cruel to them, however, welcoming them into her home was a show of support for their false teachings. (2 John 1:1-1:13)
After concluding today’s reading, consider the following: What message is John giving? Why is it important? How is it relevant today? How can you apply it to your life?
