On Thursday, November 9, 2023, Brent Brewer was executed in Texas.  He was pronounced dead at 6:38 pm local time, inside the Walls Unit execution chamber at the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  Brent was 53 years of age.  He was  convicted of murdering 66-year-old Robery Doyle Laminack on April 26, 1990, in Amarillo, Texas.  Brent spent the last 32 years of his life on Texas’ death row.

Growing up, Brent did not know his father. He dropped out of school after the 9th grade. At the age of 15, Brent met his father and experienced emotional and physical abuse from him, leading Brent to suffer from severe depression that resulted in a hospitalization. Brent did not have a criminal record and before his arrest, he worked as a farm hand.

While hospitalized for his depression, Brent Brewer met Kristie Nystrom, an exotic dancer. The two developed a romantic relationship which continued after they were both released. Observers noted that Nystrom seemed to dominate and control Brewer.

On April 26, 1990, Brewer and Nystrom approached Robert Laminack outside of the business he owned and asked him to give them a ride to the local Salvation Army office. Robert agreed. During the drive, Brewer brandished a knife and stabbed Robert to death while Nystrom helped restrain Robert. The couple then stole $140 from his wallet and fled the scene. They went to the apartment of a friend where they changed clothing before going to the hospital. Brewer had obtained a deep cut on his palm during the murder.

Both were arrested about two weeks later on May 8, 1990, in Red Oak, Texas. Brewer eventually confessed to the crime. He was convicted and sentenced to death. Nystrom was sentenced to life in prison for her part in the murder. She became eligible for parole in 2005, however, parole has not been granted to her at the time of this writing.
