On Thursday, July 28, 2022, Alabama carried out the execution of Joe Nathan James, Jr. He was pronounced dead at 9:27 pm local time inside the execution chamber at the Holeman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. Joe was 50 years of age. He was convicted and executed for murdering Faith Hall on August 15, 1994, in Birmingham, Alabama. Joe spent the last 25 years of his life on death row in Alabama.
During her pregnancy, Joe’s mother drank alcohol. As a child, Joe and his family moved frequently and lived in poverty. His father was absent from his life and his mother was not around much during his childhood. After leaving Joe’s father, his mother had many relationships with different men. Joe had previously broken the arm of one of his girlfriends. He had also beaten a man at Job Corps.
During the early 1990s, Joe James and Faith Hall dated. It was a violent relationship and following their breakup, James stalked and harassed Faith. He also threatened to kill Faith.
On August 15, 1994, Faith was out shopping with her friend, Tammy Sneed. As they drove back to Tammy’s apartment, they noticed James following them in another vehicle. Upon arriving at Tammy’s apartment, the two quickly entered, along with another resident, Bridget Gregory. The three women talked about what to do about James following Faith. Bridget agreed to return to her apartment and call the police, as Tammy did not have a phone.
As Bridget opened the door, James was waiting outside the door and pushed his way into the apartment. James, who was armed with a gun, demanded Faith tell him about the man she had been out with the night before. Faith begged James to put down the gun, as there were children in the apartment. Instead, James shot Faith. She died from her injuries.
James fled the state. He was eventually arrested in California. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996, and again on retrial in 1999.
