What Is In A Name – Prince of Peace
Prince of Peace
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
… Prince of Peace.
(Isaiah 9:6, NIV)
World peace! In the 2000 movie, Miss Congeniality, this was the answer every beauty pageant contestant was expected to give when asked what society needs. Today, it is often wondered if such a thing is possible. With all the chaos in the world, people often focus on bringing peace into their personal lives. True peace, worldwide or individually, can only be found through the Prince of Peace.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27, NIV)
Jesus spoke to His disciples on the topic of peace before His death. Peace was His gift to the disciples. It is His gift to us. The world is a wild and chaotic place. Peace cannot be found in the world. Peace can only be found through faith in Jesus Christ. When we rest our eyes upon Him, we give Him our troubles, our fears, our anxieties, our worries.
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” (John 20:19, NIV)
The disciples had their world rocked by the death of their friend, Jesus Christ. They did not understand and feared what could happen to them. In this verse, it is revealed that they were hiding in a room when Jesus suddenly appeared. His first word to them was “Peace!” The disciples should have peace. They should let go of their fears and rest in the peace that is Jesus Christ.
People often have their own ideas of what it means to live in peace. Often they think of tranquility and not a care in the world. While Jesus promises us peace in Him, He never promises that our life will be tranquil or without care. Instead, Jesus has promised that we will suffer trials and tribulations. But we can have peace during those trials and tribulations, when we rest in our assurance of Jesus Christ.
So what does this mean for us? What is your idea of peace? Does it match what Jesus says in the Bible? Peace is difficult to obtain and even harder to maintain. Satan does not want us to have peace. How can you make sure you keep your eyes fixed on the Prince of Peace, and keep your peace?
