What Is In A Name – Head of the Church
Head of the Church
17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. (Colossians 1:17-18, NIV)
We all like to think we lead our own lives. We are in charge! No one can tell us what to do! We may take suggestions and advice from others, but ultimately the choice and decision is ours to make. We are the supreme authority in our lives! Or so we think. For, in the end, there is One we must answer to, One to whom we must account for all the decisions we made. He is truly in charge!
The Church of Christ is not a building. It is not a denomination. It is the entirety of all who profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. All who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are part of the Church of Christ, the body of Christ. And Jesus is the head. He is in charge!
The head of a human body holds the most important part of our body – the brain. The brain controls all that we do. It directs the body; it tells our muscles how to work to make us walk and directs our fingers to the correct letters on a keyboard to type out words. Without a head, our heart would not know to beat, to keep the body alive.
As the head of the church, Jesus, His words, should be directing all that we do. The individual churches, physical buildings, to which we belong, are to be guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ – the Bible. Pastors, priests, and other church teachers and leaders must be preaching the Word of God. Ultimately leadership for the church resides with Jesus Christ.
Even as individuals within the larger church of Christ, Jesus is still the head! Just as our teachers, pastors, priests, and other leaders are to be guided by Jesus, so are all believers! Jesus should be a part of our everyday lives! Our thoughts, our actions, our words, our beliefs should all be guided by His teachings. As Head of the Church, Jesus is head of everything!
So what does this mean for us? Jesus should be in charge of our lives! He is the supreme authority…in everything! We should seek His guidance in everything that we do. Do you turn to Him daily? Do you seek to ensure that all that you do is in accordance with His word? Yes, everything! There is nothing that can be hidden from Him.
