Troy Davis Executed in Georgia

Troy DavisThe state of Georgia executed Troy Anthony Davis on September 21, 2011. Troy was pronounced dead at 11:08 pm local time, inside the execution chamber at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, in Jackson, Georgia. Troy was 42 years of age. He was executed for the murder of 27-year-old Officer Mark Allen MacPhail on August 19, 1989, in Savannah, Georgia. Troy spent the last 20 years of his life on Georgia’s death row.

Troy’s parents divorced when he was young. He dropped out of high school in the 11th grade. Troy previously worked as a drilling technician, although he had poor attendance. He also signed up for the United State Marine Corps. Troy was also convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and shooting another individual.

Troy had insisted that he was innocent of the crime for which he was convicted and executed. Bullet casings, identical to the ones used by Troy were found at the crime scene. Although several eyewitnesses placed Troy at the crime scene, many later recanted their statements, causing many to believe that Troy was innocent of the crime.
