Ohio Execution of Charles Lorraine Rescheduled from March 15, 2023 to May 13, 2026

Updated: Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Charles LorraineOhio planned to execute Charles Lorraine on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Mansfield, Ohio. His execution has been rescheduled to May 13, 2026. Fifty-six-year-old Charles is convicted of murdering 77-year-old Raymond Montgomery and 80-year-old Doris Montgomery in their Warren, Ohio home on May 5, 1986. Charles has been on Ohio’s death row for the last 36 years.

Charles Lorraine met Raymond and Doris Montgomery when he was hired to do odd jobs around their home in Warren, Ohio. On May 5, 1986, Lorraine went to the Montgomery home and claimed he had left something of his upstairs. Raymond accompanied him upstairs. Lorraine surprised Raymond and stabbed him in the back five times with a butcher’s knife. Lorraine then returned downstairs to Doris, who was bedridden. She was stabbed nine times. Raymond and Doris both died from their injuries.

After stabbing the couple, Lorraine burglarized the home before going to a bar and using the stolen money to buy drinks. While at the bar, he bragged about killing two “old people.” Lorraine left the bar with a friend. Together they broke into another house, stealing $40 and a car. They then returned to the Montgomery house to steal more money, jewelry, and a gun before going out for breakfast.

The next day, May 6, 1986, Lorraine went to the police station on an unrelated matter. He eventually confessed to the police that he murdered Raymond and Doris. He was later convicted by a jury and sentenced to death.

Due to ongoing problems establishing an execution protocol and obtaining drugs for use in executions, Governor Mike DeWine continually issues reprieves ahead of execution dates. This results in executions being rescheduled. Charles Lorraine’s March 15, 2023, execution date is rescheduled to May 13, 2026. Pray for the family of Raymond and Doris Montgomery. Pray for strength for the family of Charles Lorraine. Please pray that if Charles is innocent, lacks the competency to be executed, or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be presented before his execution. Pray that Charles will come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
