Focus Verses For Today: Hebrews 7:24-27

Today, we continue our journey through the book of Hebrews, with a study of high priests and why Jesus is the last and ultimate High Priest.

Ask the Lord for His understanding of Hebrews 5-7. Read Hebrews 5-7. Let’s journey!

HebrewsHebrews 5-7: Our reading begins with a description of a high priest – they are chosen by the Lord. The author of Hebrews encourages those to whom he is writing to not fall away from their faith in Christ, to continue to grow, because God always upholds His promises. The author then moves onto the topic of high priests – Jesus is the final High Priest, the High Priest forever. Having been raised in Jewish traditions, the readers would have been extremely familiar with Aaron and the history of the high priests, as given by the author. In encouraging the readers, the author was relating information to them in a way that they would understand. The author was explaining why it would be a mistake to return to Judaism and abandon their newfound faith. (Hebrews 5:1-7:28)

Our focus verses for today:

24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
(Hebrews 7:24-27, NIV)

Before the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, sacrifices needed to be made repeatedly. The sacrifices would be performed by a high priest. Jesus Christ is the ultimate High Priest. He made the ultimate sacrifice, the final sacrifice. He was the perfect sacrifice, without blemish. Only through Jesus Christ, is total, permanent salvation achieved. He is the high priest we all need! Have you accepted the sacrifice He made for you? Take some time and contemplate how and why His sacrifice was complete.
