Focus Verses For Today: Nehemiah 2:16-18
Our journey today begins the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was the cupbearer to the king of Persia before he made the long journey to his ancestral city of Jerusalem, a place he had heard about but never seen. Nehemiah continues with the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Take a moment and pray, asking for understanding of today’s reading. Read Nehemiah 1-4. Let’s journey!
Nehemiah 1-4: Nehemiah was greatly grieved to hear about the ruin of Jerusalem and prayed to the Lord for guidance. Nehemiah obtained permission to return to Jerusalem and, upon arrival, took up a leadership position to restore the walls of the city. Careful records were kept about who repaired which gates in the wall. Opposition arose from enemies of the Israelites. (Nehemiah 1:1-4:23)
Our focus verses for today:
16 The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.
17 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.
They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
(Nehemiah 2:16-18, NIV)
Nehemiah, having sought out and recognized God’s will, was willing to take charge by encouraging others. God had given him a directive and a plan and Nehemiah sought to fulfill it. It is up to us to act, like Nehemiah, when God gives us a directive. God can show us what we are to do and prepare the path for us, but it is up to us, like Nehemiah, to walk the path and fulfill God’s will. What path has God prepared for you? Are you following Him?
