Focus Verses For Today: 2 John 1:10-11

Today, our journey takes us through the entirety of 2 John. This letter is written by the Apostle John. This letter was likely written near the end of John’s life. John maintained his zeal for Christ throughout his life and is believed to be the longest-living eyewitness to Jesus Christ.

Before reading, stop and pray, asking that the Lord provide understanding of 2 John. Read 2 John. Let’s journey!

1, 2, and 3 John2 John: John continues with his theme of love in this letter. This letter is addressed to a woman known for her hospitality. John commends her for her actions (and the raising of her children) but also issues a warning of allowing her gift to lead her, and others, astray. Love is to be shown to all, but there must also be discretion. John warned the woman against hosting false teachers. She was not to be mean or cruel to them, however, welcoming them into her home was a show of support for their false teachings. (2 John 1:1-1:13)

Our focus verses for today:

10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.
(2 John 1:10-11, NIV)

John is not advocating against showing kindness to false teachers, he is warning against supporting them. During the times of the early church, teachers would travel from town to town and receive shelter from the local church. While the woman was commended for her willingness to offer hospitality, she must ensure that those she is hosting are true followers. While today we do not frequently host strangers in our homes, we still allow them into our lives in various ways, such as through the internet and social media. What content are we allowing in your life, your temple, your home? Do you follow those who mock the Lord, who attempt to use His Word and twist it towards their own purpose? Have you let false teachers and deceivers into your life? Remove them! And return your focus to the Lord!
