The Names of Jesus

What Is In A Name: Cornerstone

Cornerstone

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22, NIV)

The cornerstone is a very important part of a building project, especially in ancient times. Without it, a building cannot be built, cannot be completed. The cornerstone is just that, a specifically cut stone, placed in the corner of a building. It often serves as a foundation for the rest of the building, helping guide workers as they continue and complete constructions. An improperly cut, or improperly installed cornerstone can ruin an entire building project.

CornerstoneThroughout the Old Testament, the prophesied savior is referred to as a cornerstone. He will establish a New Kingdom, fulfill the law of Moses, and bring justice to the righteous. Many, many thought this mean the coming Savior would be a warrior, come to overthrow the repressive regime under which they lived. They did not realize the spiritual implications.

In the New Testament, Jesus is referenced as the cornerstone, showing that He is the prophesied Savior. He came to offer eternal salvation to all who would accept it, through His sacrifice. This salvation allows us to throw off the oppressive regime of sin, under which we all live. Jesus is the cornerstone upon which Christianity is built. Through Jesus, the Church of Christ is joined together.

Jesus serves not only as the cornerstone of the church but also as the cornerstone of each believer’s life. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we begin construction anew. We must tear down the life of sin in which we lived before and build up a new life, a life that has Jesus guiding our actions and lives.

So what does this mean for us? In life, each person has their own building project. Our life is a building project! The cornerstone in our life determines how we live, how we act, and how we treat others. What is your cornerstone? Does your life reflect Jesus as your cornerstone?
