The state of South Dakota carried out the execution of Donald Eugene Moeller on October 20, 2012. Donald was pronounced dead at 10:24 pm local time, inside the execution chamber at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Donald was 60 years of age. He was convicted and executed for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of 9-year-old Becky O’Connell on May 8, 1990, near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Donald spent the last 20 years of his life on death row in South Dakota.
Donald had a difficult and deprived childhood. His family never celebrated Christmas, and he had very little clothing. By the age of 8, Donald was an alcoholic. By the age of 11, Donald was smoking marijuana, which lead to huffing gasoline and other inhalants. Donald also had a history of sexual assault and, on the day of Becky’s murder, was informed that the police were attempting to place him in jail for life as a habitual offender.
