DAY 157 JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE IN A YEAR

Focus Verses For Today: 1 Kings 9:6-9
In today’s reading, we are given a glimpse of what Solomon accomplished during his first 24 years as King of Israel. It also shows that Solomon struggled with temptations, as does all mankind.

1 Kings 5-9: Our reading begins by detailing the preparation for, and construction of, the Temple. We are then given details regarding the construction of Solomon’s palace. It took 13 years to build the palace. It only took 7 years to build the Temple. The Place is much larger than the Lord’s temple. Is something about Solomon changing? The Ark is brought to the Temple and the Temple is dedicated in a celebration that lasted 14 days. The Lord reaffirms His covenant to Solomon and Solomon’s heirs. However, Solomon appears to not be dealing with people with the integrity he had in the past. (1 Kings 5:1-9:28)
Our focus verses for today:
6 “But if you or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ 9 People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.’”

God had made a promise to King David. God repeated and extended that very same promise to King Solomon. The Lord promised them that as long as they and their descendants worshipped no other gods, the reign of the family of King David’s lineage would continue. King David was always at war with his kingdom and himself. He relied on God for protection. He had a relationship with God. King Solomon reigned for 40 years. All 40 years were years of peace. Solomon had royalty form. Other nations visited him with gifts expanding over his great wisdom. The praise of man is a dangerous thing.
